一、课程介绍

This course offers an introduction to aspects of the Ancient Greek philosophical heritage, primarily focusing on the pre-Socratic and Hellenistic periods that are particularly important for much modern philosophy, as well as for Chinese-Western comparative philosophy. The first two parts cover the origins and background of Ancient Greek philosophy, introductions to central pre-Socratic thinkers including Anaximander, Heraclitus and Parmenides, and overviews of later foundational figures in Skepticism, Epicureanism and Stoicism including Pyrrho, Epicurus and Chrysippus. In the final part of the course, we will examine the influential interpretations of Ancient Greek philosophies proposed by key modern philosophers including Nietzsche, Heidegger, Deleuze and Foucault, focusing on how they have taken up key themes from pre-Socratic and Hellenistic philosophy such as Becoming, Being, naturalism and self-cultivation. As such, the course aims to engage students who are already familiar with Plato and Aristotle with a broader range of Ancient Greek philosophy and its modern relevance.

二、授课方式

Although the course will consist primarily of lectures in English, there will also be weekly student presentations and discussions of the previous week’s material in Chinese. In addition to presentations, students will be expected to submit a short mid-term paper (under 1500 words) and a longer final paper (2500-3000 words).
